Mark, I am watching your video and noted several code violations and questions on workmanship. First and foremost NEC requires all electrical connections be made inside box (in this case one approved for ceiling fans) with connector where wires enter. This prevents fires starting in fan or box from spreading to attic. Second important note, if you are doing electrical work, you should invest in proper tools, wire strippers prevent "ringing" of wires, even minor cuts in wire will cause wire to break off when wire nut is installed. (code requires 4" of wire inside the box for make up) Third and most important, if this is a plastic covered romex, the ground has been cut or broken off, in some older homes wiring was done without a ground, however since its inception romex has always carried a ground wire. Your connecting the ground wire from the hanger to the fan does nothing to ground the fan. I bring this to your attention as a licenced electrical contractor that has seen improper installations causing problems from homes burning down a woman being shocked when she touched her fan. Naturally I would prefer people contact a proffesional, however many will want to hang their own. If you are going to produce a video to show them how, please do it properly.

Connecting Black Wires for Ceiling Fan Installation

Hi I'm Mark Sullivan for Expert Village. Today we are going to learn how to install a ceiling fan in your home. The next step is to wire our black to the black. Now our instruction says the fan light is controlled by the blue wire. So we are going to twist both of these together and then connect it to the black. So we would leave ourselves about this much wire. So we are going to cut this off, strip them back just a little bit, and then see how you pull of the installation like that. We are going to do the same to this wire just cut it off a little. Try not to cut any of your wires very delicately trim that. Then you just pull it right off. Then we have our black and blue wires this blue is for our light kit which we would be adding in just one moment. So we are going to go ahead and twist these 2 together. Then we are going to hook them up to our black power supply. I'm going to trim this back just a little bit here. Then we would take off our wire nut. We would simply lay this wire up next to our black power supply wire like that. You see how they are both lying next to each other and then we put a wire nut onto both of them holding them together. Screw this wire nut on. Now we are going to go push these kind of back into place a little bit. Just kind of get them out of the way so they will be inside of the cover of the housing.
