Strength & Core Training in Martial Arts

Michael Lewis with Yeshua Ryu martial arts on behalf of Expert Village. We're talking today about speed drills. The speed is key when you're doing any kind of martial arts thing. Whether you?re sparring or just in your Kata's wherever it might be, self defense techniques. Speed is very, very, very important. And, so what you want to do is one of the most basic things in martial arts is that you work not only on your power. But, also on your speed. It doesn't really matter to have a super powerful punch if you're not quick enough to land it. So, speed is one of the top key priorities when you're training in the martial arts. Now, as far as when you're sparring he has his hands up. The thing that your brain has to really go through when training for speed, is first it has to see the technique coming at you. So, he throws a punch. You have to see it first. The next thing that your brain has to do, is it has to pretty much recognize what that strike is. And, the fact that it's a threat and that you have to block it. And, then you have to react to it and your brain has to choose how to react. So, you have to make a bunch of decisions in just a few split seconds. So, he throws that punch. Automatically, I'm going to block this way. Because, I have been trained to block that over and over and over again. So, it becomes a reflex. Another way, is he throws a straight punch towards my head. I'm able to turn and block that way. And, that's how speed can benefit your martial arts training.
