How to Inspect the Gasket When Cleaning the Refrigerator
Hi! I am Drew Finn, we are going to talk about how to clean and maintain your refrigerator for Expertvillage.com. One or more energy saving things we can do is make sure your gasket is good all the way round the door. Gasket consists of an elastomeric material with a magnet inside, and you want them inspected all the way round, so that it can flex a little bit, so if the door does not fit exactly on the fridge this will make up the difference and make an airtight seal, and it will you keep the cold in and keep your energy bills down. Now we want to check through the gasket all the way around, and particularly down along the bottom, that is usually where they wear out, and if you see black coming through or a piece of material hanging out, if the magnet is darker, you should have a gray brownish material, then that gasket needs replacement, and you can replace these gaskets. Now to check to see if it is sealing all the way around, we are going to use a dollar bill, put it in, close the door, and pull it out. If it pulls off really easy we know it is not making good contact. So let me show you how that is done. We open the freezer door, we have got a good surface here, we are going to close the bill in the door, so that the gasket is holding in. We pull on the bill see it is holding really good, we want to repeat that around the door to make sure we have a good seal everywhere. It is a really good test. So if it is not sealing that bill will drop right out.
