Resources for Information on Bicycle: Parts & Their Functions

Charles McMahon for Expert Village. We’ve talked about the bicycle and I’ve been mentioning a college level textbook, I have it right here, I thought I would just show you what it is and describe it a little bit. You can see is called Structural Materials and it is a text book that we use at University of Pennsylvania for second year engineering students to teach them about structural materials and the book is mostly about the bicycle, in other words they use the bicycle as the paradigm for discussing metals and polymers and the ceramics and so on, all structural materials and materials you built things out of. This is a new edition and so the last three chapters are on biological structure materials, in other words the leg, you know, your leg is the engine of the bicycle, so there is a chapter on soft connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, meniscus, cartilage. Another chapter on bone and they worked together like the components of the crane, then of course the motor is the muscle, so the last chapter is on muscle and how muscle works. So the text book has a CD-ROM it comes with it and they have these little indicators here, every time you see one of these, there is an animation that you play on your computer and that will give you a better idea of what is happening with some phenomenon that involves motion. So the book comes with a CD that has these tutorials, it also has a glossary and there’s a glossary at end of each chapter but the CD has an interactive glossary, so you can use either glossary at the end of the chapter, you can use that for studying or you can use the glossary, you look up things faster on the CD. Another thing you can get with separate from the book is a CD that has tutorials and this actually teaches the course, so when we give this course the students get their lecture for the day on these tutorials it’s basically lectures with animations, figures etc., video clips and then when they come to class we just discuss this, we answer questions, ask questions and so on. So I don’t give lectures any more, students don’t learn that much in lectures anyhow. We have sort of every class has review session and a few students have just not bothered coming to class at all, they got whole course from the tutorials and they did pretty well in the exams. So this can be a self taught course if you want, you get the textbook and the tutorials, you can teach yourself a pretty high level course in engineering structure and materials. Obviously this is, you know engineers and technically trained people might be interested in this but this is just too much detail in here for the average person.
