Charles McMahon for Expert Village. We’re talking about how the bicycle goes together. If you want to get more in-depth information you can look at my college level textbook on merionmedia.com. Now we have talked about the different kinds of materials for the frame. The challenge has always been how do you put these pieces together, in other words this thing came as a tube here, a tube here, a tube here and these components down here how do you put them together to make a frame. Well when you are using the first wooden frame, it was probably screwed together then, say, bamboo frames were probably glued together, they were the early ways. Then when they went to steel tubing they braced them. So if you look at a braced steel frame you will see little sleeves here and bracings like soldering, they call it bracing, the filler metal that flows in, melts at greater temperature than 450 degrees Fahrenheit, if it is less they call it soldering, if it’s more they call it bracing. Bikes were braced for decades. Then when mountain bikes came out, they didn’t have the right sleeves or the right sizes to fit the tubes, which had a greater diameter, so they switched over to welding and you can see this frame, this is an aluminum frame and it’s welded, you can see these welds around here. So lots of steel frames are now welded, most aluminum frames are welded, titanium frames are welded. Now an alternative is to go back to gluing, they call it bonding. So you have to have a sleeve here, put the tube in the sleeve, you put a proxy in here and you can get a very nice joint by bonding. Now some bikes will have Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic and obviously you can’t weld that and you can’t brace it, so all of the carbon fiber frames are bonded with a proxy so that is the challenge, you have to match up the material with the bonding technique to put the frame together.
