Materials Used in a Bicycle Frame

Charles McMahon for Expert Village. We’re talking about how bicycles put together. If you want more information you look at my college level textbook that is described on merionmedia.com. In this segment, we are going to talk about the frame. Now the frame is the most obvious component of the bicycle. This is what you see right away when you see a bicycle. Now the frame as it has evolved over more than 100 years has evolved into this sort of shape, it is the diamond frame, obviously it is shaped like a diamond and you have two triangles, the front triangle and the rear triangle and the triangle is a very stable structure. So this is why the frame has evolved this way. Now frames, the initial frames were made out of wood, later on bamboo, later on they were made out of steel when people figured out how to make steel tubing, then later on alloy steel. Heat treated steel that was a lot stronger so that you can make it thinner walled and therefore lighter. After that aluminium was used, this frame happens to be aluminium. You can see it is painted but it does not have to be painted because it would not corrode. Later on titanium tubing was used for frames. They are the most expensive bikes you never paint a titanium frame because the titanium is so beautiful on its own.
