How to Train a Dog to Walk Around You

Hi, I'm Jim Leske, animal trainer for Expert Village. Today we're giving you basic dog training tips. This next move is called an around. This is another show move that you'll see them do in the ring, very competitive in the dogs shows, they get one chance at this, no treats, no hand signals, just one verbal cue and that's it, it's sink or swing in the ring. Even though you may never enter your dog in a dog show, this again is nothing else but a little bit of practice. This is a great trick to show off to your friends and relatives with and so Bear is going to help me out, show you the around. With the around, you always get your dog to start off sitting dead center in front of you. Very good, sit, the biggest part of this trick is getting everything from one hand to the other. The other thing is that behind me, once I switch everything from one hand to the other, if I bring my empty hand back out here, he's going to follow it right back up so I always make a point of hiding it back here, okay? So with that, we're going to get Bear to do our around. We're going to rock the foot just like we do waiting for, he's yeah, I heard the word, huh? Come on over here and I want him to remember how to do it correctly on my terms so that's why we're starting over, that's a good sit. Alright Bear, around, very good, very good boy, very very good. Now the hardest part of this exercise again is the human switching from one hand to the other so I'm going to try to give you a little better profile what happens behind me while all this is going on. So Bear, sit, sit, very good boy, very good sit, okay, and with that, around, very good boy, very good boy. The important part is once you switch hands, keep that empty hand back there so he doesn't come back the other way around. So that's the around, I hope you have fun working with you and your dog on that and we're going to be right back with another one called relax.
