How to Train a Dog to Come

Hi, I'm Jim Leske, animal trainer with Expert Village. Today we're talking about basic training for dogs. This particular one is one of the ones I hear this complaint all the time about, sit. The biggest complaint I hear from dog owners is that my dog doesn't come when called so we're going to address that issue right now. This is a very simple practice exercise. I have my food reward right in my hand right here and basically, it's kind of like a very easy dance step. All I'm going to do is take three steps forward, three steps back, I'm going to talk to Bear the whole time and we're always going to finish with a sit. So, Bear, let's walk, leave it, let's walk, Bear come, very good, very good. Now the advantage of doing it here in public is that in the real world there's a lot of distractions. In your back yard it's the perfect class room, there are no distractions. But if they're so overwhelmed by all this new stimuli, they're not going to listen to you so that's why we always practice in public. So we'll try that one more time. Bear, let's walk, good boy, I back up, Bear come, very good boy, finish with a sit, very good dog, very very very good. Very very good. I'm Jim, this is Bear and we'll be right back with sit and stay while you walk around your dog, right after this.
