How to Play Swing Drum Beats

PAT LOUIS: On behalf Expert Village, I'm Pat Louis in Miami, Florida. And today, I'm going to show you some basic drum rhythms. Now, let's talk a little bit about the different kinds of beats there are and the different kinds of songs you can play them to. The standard that has always been a big part of the industry is the swing or the jazz feel. And that's again where you're doing, pap, pap, paparap, paparap, paparap on the ride cymbal or on the snare, I mean the high hat, and your snare is very loose. You can actually use a snare or not to use the snare. It's not so important that it's on 2 and 4 at all times because when you're working with guys who are playing trumpet and chops and they're getting into jazz, you know, they maybe accenting things that have nothing to do with doing 2 or 1, so you're going to be. The other thing is that some people will use their drum sticks like this, others like this. This is what I prefer.
