Tips on Comping Piano Chords in Voice Chording

Now we want to just take a second and really talk about the art of comping, and there's really a very in-depth way to look at it. It's not just really playing chords and hitting some notes under somebody else playing a melody. You really have to approach it in an artistic way, and if you think about it, if you compare it as to a painting, a good painting has a main focal point where it really catches the eye and brings it to it and then it has this background which really supports the picture, and really brings that focal point. So it doesn't distract from the focal point and take your way, it really helps to support. And that's really your rule is a supportive role. So if you're playing too loud or too aggressive, hitting way too many notes that's another one that some people will say, "Oh, you're playing way too many notes," it's a funny one. So it's really true, you really have to leave enough space for the people to breathe and really take everything in. So it's really a balance between enough notes and not too many notes. Just getting there right in between, and it's really this very complex process that it takes years to develop, and really get a tone to listening in, and really the key is listening in to the band around you, and just becoming part of that environment, instead of taking over that environment. So, just another thing to really think about as you go and start jamming out with some of your friends in the local town pub or wherever you may play.
