How to Free Lunge a Horse at a Walk

Hi, I'm Kelli and this is Covey and on behalf of Expert Village we are going to show you my options and techniques on how to free lunge your horse. So now that we have entered the round pen and we have our whip and we have our horse here who is free, we are going to have her go around on the rail, around the round pen at a walk. So I'm just going to get at her shoulder. I'm going to point the whip at her hatches. Give her a little cluck of encouragement if I have to so she would go around the rail at a walk. When you are in this type of setting there, of course a lot more freedom for the horse to do what they kind of want. So you want to make sure that you have a horse that listens very well to voice command, is respectful a lunge whip if you tend to do this type of training. So we are just going to stay at her shoulder, make sure we are following her around, holding our whip nice and low at her hatches. We don't want her to really go anywhere right now. We just want her to stay walking around really nice and calm. Make sure she is staying on the rail. We want to keep the whip pointed at her so she does not come in off the rail. If she comes off the rail a little bit, we are just going to lift up our whip, we are going to point at them so they go back out in the rail. That is how you want to walk your horse when you are free lunging.
