How to Transition a Horse from Walk to Canter

I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you some tips and techniques that I use when cantering and loping my horse. So there is a couple of things that you want to do when you?re preparing to go into the canter with your horse. First, of all you want to make sure that you have some degree of collection with your horses head. You want to make sure as you can see she has flexed at the pole and she has a little bit of a collection in her neck. This is going to make her shoulders more lifted it is going to keep her back more rounded. It is going to keep her hunches driving underneath her better. So she is going to have a cleaner canter and more balance canter and a smoother canter. It is going to keep more cadent. So the next thing you want to do is of course you want to make sure your keeping your posture, you want to make sure that your sitting nice and square on the horse. You want to make sure that you are having shoulder, hip and heel aligned. You have your heels down. The next thing that you want to do is when you ask your horse to canter you are going to ask your horse to canter off of your outside legs. So if you are going to the left you are going to use your right leg to canter. If you?re going to the right you are going to use your left leg to canter. So just to in sure your horse picks up the more lead is more balanced and we would have the proper amount of cadent that she needs to maintain forward momentum. So what you are going to do when you ask your horse to canter is you are going to get a little bit of collection. You are going to lay your outside leg on the horse which would cause the horse hip to come in a little bit. Which would in sure that your horse steps forward with this leg and leads with the proper leg. So once you have your horse set up properly you are prepare to go into your canter.
