I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you some tips and techniques that I use when cantering and loping my horse. So the first thing before your start cantering your horse is you want to make sure that you have your horse trained to go on there properly. Now this may take a lot of practice. So basically what a lead is, a canter is a 3 leading gate. So when your horse is going, say your horse is going to the left you want to make sure that the left front leg, is leading in front. You don't want the right front leg to be leading your front. So this is more of a balance thing so this is going to in sure that your horse is better balanced when you are riding around. It is going to keep your horses shoulders more square so it would not happen to fall one way or the other. It would just be a lot more comfortable for you to ride as well. Now some of your more advance horse you can ride around on the long lead for training purposes. But when you riding say you are riding in a show situation say something like that you would want to make sure your horse is trained to be on the proper lead. So say you are riding to the left you want to make sure that left front leg is the front leg that is coming forward. Again if you riding to the right you want to make sure that your right front leg is the front leg that is coming forward. So some horses depending on how balanced they are this is going to be easier for them. But it is definitely something that you want to make sure your horse is trained to properly do, just in sure that there balance for your horse, more comfort for your riding and if you would happen to show your horse you would definitely would lose points from the judge. If you happen to be on the wrong lead. So just making sure that your know what your lead is. Eventually the more that you ride the more balance you would become, you are able to feel it without even looking. Especially if you have a horse that you have ridden for a long period of time that you are really comfortable with. In the beginning you may find that you have to look to see what shoulder is coming forward, or which leg is coming forward. But that is definitely you want to be aware of when you are riding your horse. Because if you are riding in a show situation you would definitely would loose points if your horse is on the wrong lead. So that is just the description of what a lead when you are cantering your horse is actually is.
