How to Prepare Yams

This odd shaped root is a potato. It's a sweet potato. Also known as a yam. Great for holidays. Candied yams are so delicious and so good for you. They're rich in nutrients and vitamins, they are exceptional to eat year round and they're very reasonably priced. So it can be a side dish or a main dish, especially for the vegetarian fare at any time. A little later I'm going to show you how to roast these and they are so easy to do and they are a real time saver if you can do a few at a time, at the same time. As you notice, I'm just quickly giving the yam a nice all over peel to get rid of the skin. The skin is very good for you. So you could just scrub it and chop it and throw it in a roasting pan and you can eat it with the skin completely and it would be delicious. I'm going to use this for another dish. So I decided to take off all of the skin, I'm going to lose the ends, I'm just going to cut them in consistent chunks because I'm going to roast them all at the same time. Your trick for roasting vegetables all at the same time, is to make sure that the cuts are similar shapes and sizes. So I've just made some wheels. This one here. And I'm using my nice, sharp chef's knife. I'm just going to quarter them, third them, eighth them whatever in about pieces like that. I'm going to have my baking pan handy, because that's a great time saver. Rather than go around and looking, putting them in a side bowl or what not, have the baking dish that you're going to actually cook them in standing by handy. That's a great time saver. As we all know, I love to save time and I like to minimize mess. You notice that I've used this mulching bin next to me for a lot of my scraps. I recommend that you start doing the same thing around your home because as you can see, even just with these few shows that I've been working with today, you can see that I've generated a lot of waste that would normally go in the trash. Instead now I've created mulch which will help grow more fruits and vegetables for the future; beautiful baked yams to come.
