What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Hello my name is Dr. Susan Jewell and on behalf of Expert Village I am going to talk to you today about hemorrhoids. About the causes of hemorrhoids and the signs and symptoms and what you can actually do to relieve the pain from hemorrhoids. Now in this clip we are going to show you how hemorrhoids are formed. If you take a look at this diagram that I have drawn this is actually someone's body. This would be the head region here. And this would be his foot area. So this is a rough diagram of the anus region and the rectum because this represents the colon and here is the belly button to give you orientation. Now the sphincter muscle which actually if I draw it is if this is and if you was to look down at a person this would be the sphincter muscle. So this would be the anus region and the anus is actually a ring of muscular circular muscles that contracts and relaxes when you are passing stools. But the anus is supplied by lots of blood vessels which I have here in longitudinal section. So you can see the blood vessels actually supplying the sphincter muscles around here. Now what happens is hemorrhoids are formed when there is like increased pressure on these vessels so that you have got increased pressure either from certain drugs or diets, or being overweight or pregnancy by the developing fetus getting larger. It compresses these vessels here so that it stops the blood flow from actually reaching the sphincter muscle and these vessels here then actually start to bulge out and then you are going to get a massive these vessels will bulge and you will get big hemorrhoids or out growths. External ones or you can also get internal hemorrhoids. So that is actually the cause of hemorrhoids the formation of hemorrhoids.
