How to Read Dotted Note Drum Beats

Now we're going to focus on some dotted notes, and we have some left line syncopations here in our left hand, and here we are, if this is C, we have one, two, three, four, so four, six, one is our melody. Now we have the syncopations written down. So dotted notes get one and a half their value, so dotted quarters gets one and a half a beat, so this is one, two, and there, four. One, two, and three, four. And notice, this notes tied, too. So it's played like this, one, two, and three, four. One, two, and three, four. And then this is the same thing written out but without the tie, we have one, two, and three four, one, two, and three, four. So if we play this in both hands we have, two and three, four, one, two, and three, and four. And these are eighth rests too which we're also inducing, so these are on the offbeats. One and two and three and four and... so we're really accenting the offbeats in these measures and that's why we made it reggae. Again...and if you look at my hand, right here we're just outlining four, six, one, and then four, six, two in our right hand. And then this is all four, six, one. These are some hit measures to get going fast. And we'll go on to our next couple of measures in just a minute.
