Spending Commissary in Jail
What's up? My name is Natural and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village to discuss how to survive in prison. In this clip I will be discussing a very important aspect of survival in prison on commissary. When I was incarcerated, we were only allowed to spend a certain amount per week because we were still allowed to get food boxes and clothing boxes sent in from people outside of the institution. If I'm understanding correctly; now none of the institutions allow for those types of boxes and packages to be sent in anymore and so you have to get everything that you need or want off of commissary. The prices are not really all that comparable to prices on the street. I think that they are a little bit more understanding of the fact that you just don't have access to money in there as you would on the street. The thing about it is that a lot of people in the institution smoke, a lot of people in the institution are not trying to eat the food that they serve at the central food service. So you have to be very, very careful about how you spend your money on commissary. Another thing that kind of connects to that is if you don't have anyone putting money on your books, you have to be extremely careful as well because you're working with just your state pay. So, having access to commissary is definitely a necessary part of survival in the prison environment. If you do have people in your world that can make sure that you can shop on commissary, try to keep those connections and ties open. I know that it sounds kind of terrible because we're in there and they're out here but the truth of the matter is that's how you survive when you're in there. It definitely boosts everything; moral, confidence, happiness, all those good things. To not have that service would be very, very horrific and worse yet that it would to have that service and not have access to it because you don't have any dough. Once you have some dough be very, very careful and wise about how you spend it.
