How to Play Bossa Nova on the Upright Bass Guitar

Hi! I’m Branson Garner on behalf of expertvillage.com. Today we’re going to be talking about playing a Bossa Nova feel on the upright bass. Now this is something that is really basic when it comes to either Latin Jazz or just playing Latin music, popular Latin music or anything like that. You know you can hear it in a lot of the beats that you hear around, and through it, we can get that real Latin feel. Alright, as I play this notice the emphasis on the beats of the end of 2 and the end of 4. As you noticed, I changed on the fretboard playing different notes. And as I did that, I outlined the chord changes that were in the song. So if you can just imagine a piano player or a guitar player behind you with a nice drum beat, a nice clave feel. That would give a great sound to really make this music come alive, and the bass is the backbone of that. So that is a Bossa Nova feel on the upright bass.
