How to Transition a Horse Into an Extended Jog

Hi, I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you some tips and techniques that I use when I'm trotting and jogging my horse. When you are riding, there is a couple of times that you might ask your horse to do an extended jog. For instance if you are in a show ring and you want to quickly pass a horse and get on the rail, you may ask your horse to extend so you can very quickly get around the horse and get back on the rail. You also in some of your more advanced western show classes they would ask you to do a extended jog; it just shows the level of training that your horse is at. So what you want to do an extend jog, let me move her here and we have her up to a jog. What we do is just pick up really lightly and we would just apply a little bit of leg and get her to lengthen her stride. We are staying sitting, staying with our seat bones deep in the saddle and we just using a little bit of calf pressure right at the shoulders getting her to lift her shoulders a little bit more and lengthen her stride. So we are staying with our posture in a line, we are looking where we want to go. You can see she is just moving a little bit of, not necessarily a faster pace but she is covering more ground because she lengthens her stride. So we wouldn't want her to be cruising along doing short choppy steps. We want her to have a nice fluent sweeping stride that is she is covering more ground not necessarily moving at a quicker pace. So again, a lot of this would come with training if you pick up on your horse, pick your horse, kind of lift the shoulders a little bit more it would extend out a little bit. But a lot of this comes with training. Make sure your horse is properly withing in its shoulders and engaging from the hind end. So it might take you a little of practice to get your horse good at jog. But it is an effective technique that you can use if you are trying to quickly get around the horse around the rail in the show ring. So that is how you want to ride your horse in an extend jog.
