The Purpose of Verses in Modern Rock Songs

The purpose of the verse in rock music for one, musically, the purpose of the verse is to provide, you want a good hook, you want a good melody, it's going to be a pretty basic format. But the purpose of the verse is to really be leading up to the chorus, like it is for many different genres and rock music is not really much different. One thing though, you do want to remember that is going to be different from a lot of the different other genres is kind of the purpose of the verse as far as the more of the artistic sense of writing rock music. Like we had talked about before, a thing to go for if you're just starting out in writing rock music, is just try to think of a theme that is important, a theme that is important to your generation, and a theme that is important to you ultimately. And develop that theme. And I say the verse, especially the first verse and the second and third verse might be different, but the verse is really where you get to state the problem. What it is that we're so upset about, what it is that we want changing. And to utilize the verses to really kind of create that problem and to build, to build it into that, what your chorus and your pre-chorus and all will be, which is an answer and a solution and stuff like that. So that is ultimately the purpose of the verse and you want to keep that in mind when writing the verse, structurally and just theme-wise and content-wise.
