Hi! My name is John Armstrong with expertvillage.com. I am a professional guitar instructor and today we will be discussing slide guitar and slide guitar techniques. The first thing I would like to discuss today is different types of slides available to the guitar player. The two most common types of slides material at least are your glass slide. In this case, here I have what is called a bottle slide, a blues bottle, which is just basically a small medicine bottle. Some other glass slides are just open ended tubes and the other type of common material is metal slide. In this case I have a brass slide, the chrome, steel and copper. There are many different forms and many different types of metals used. Another type that I do not want to have to show you here is ceramics, there are ceramic slides, all three of which gives different tones and have different properties. The glass slide is better used for guitars with lower action and thinner strings, your typical electric guitar. So, the glass slides kind of serve as a nice all-purpose slides especially for the electric rock guitar player. The metal slide is a lot heavier. It gives much more sustain, much for ringing to the sound. I think he has a nicer tone but since it is so much heavier it requires higher action strings, an acoustic guitar or electric guitar set up with a thicker string and a higher action, so that we do not press down into the fret wire. Either type of sliding material that you choose to use the basic techniques and the basic sound and the basic concepts will still be the same. So I guess it is just up to the individual as to which slide they prefer to use which one gives the best tone, the best feel and which one works best with their particular instrument and/or style of using in playing.
