First thing you want to do when you purchase your bass is to tune it right and you can tune it to these 4 notes. You got E if you have a piano around you can look up this tone on the internet and it will have something to play it. A D and G there is a thing on Expert Village about tunning double bass 2 as well I don't do the actual theories but you can look that up as well for tunning your bass. To find our first couple of notes we are going to play the open string and find that same note 2 strings up. You see how it's different there, same, you want to get the same and then you cut that in half and that is your 2 first frets. You want to use your first finger here and your second finger here then you get your fifth and go. (playing) Now if you have problems remembering these 2 spots are you can get stickers and mark it to on the fret board. If you like living a little dangerously you can actually mark them on, but I wouldn't mark anything in pen because they might be off. You are just a beginner. That is how you find your first couple of notes and you want to use your second and first fingers. Peace.
