Self defense: safety
Remember, whenever it comes to self defense you’re responsible for your own safety. Do not put yourself in a situation or aggravate someone who might potentially be a very aggressive or very violent person. You’re putting yourself in harms way and don’t rely on these self defense techniques whether you learn them from a book, a close friend or a martial arts teacher to save you as a magical trick to get away. Remember, self defense techniques might work very well against one size of person, the way a person moves is gong to interpret whether or not you have to move a certain way to get away. Remember, joint locks don’t work against people who are double jointed or have a high tolerance for pain. Same for pressure points. Pressure points are not the end all to self defense. They don’t work on everyone. Remember that your attitude and the way that you present yourself has a lot to do with whether or not you are singled out as a victim. People that are predators and are looking for someone to mug, rape or attack are not going to pick out the people who are walking confidentially, as if they know where they’re going and as if they have a purpose. They’re looking for someone who’s looking down, maybe hard on themselves looks depressed, walks slow or even stumbles. And please remember that taking one self defense seminar or reading a book does not mean that you know how to defend yourself. Please work with someone that you are comfortable with until you can get to the point where you are comfortable with until you get to the point where you can move naturally and do the techniques with confidence that you know how to get away. Look for a self defense teacher that does reality set based self defense. Not just traditional moves that are set in a choreographed manor. Try to have the highest level of realism and do not ever believe someone when they tell you they can absolutely teach you to defend yourself in any situation in just a short amount of time. It just does not happen there are no guaranties. And you always run the risk of getting hurt in a violent situation. So please at all costs try to avoid, say whatever you have to, to get away safe.
