Symptoms of Depression

Hi! I'm Brenda F. Dixon. I’m a licensed clinical social worker both in the states of Tennessee and in Kentucky, and we're here today with Expert Village. We've been spending some time talking about the causes of depression, a little bit about actually what types of depressions are there. We'll spend time now a little bit of time talking about what happens in the privacy of the counseling room. I wanted to tell you a little bit before we close about what the symptoms are, what it looks like so a person will know a little bit more if they are depressed. Depression will begin to show up in sleep disturbances. People will have so much trouble sleeping. When they go for many, many days or nights without sleeping, it begins to bring that chemical imbalance down. Depression can actually come in. It can come and it can go. They will actually use the ability to eat. They'll have a change in their appetite. Sometimes they'll eat more and sometimes they'll eat not enough. There's 2 changes right there that are quick to look at and to notice. Changes in sleep and changes in their appetite. A person will become real disinterested in the things that they've always loved to do. They've always loved to bike and then they don't want it. They're just not interested anymore. There's some clues about depression that people need to watch in their lives to see if they probably or maybe are getting close to being depressed or are depressed.
