How to Create Texture in Women's Hairstyles: Part 2

Hi, I'm Chris Faircloth, Artistic Director and co-owner of Salon Teez. For Expert Village, this is how to trim women's hair. Another way that we actually create texture in the hair is by talking the shears down the hair shaft. What I mean by this is not simply opening the shears and then slide cutting them, not moving the shears at all, we'll actually use the shears in closing, but slightly closing, not completely closing the blade so we cut the hair completely off. This gives us a nice layering effect all the way down the hair shaft while creating subtle layers but very, very soft layers. We can place the blade strictly into the hair shaft or we can comb out the hair so as we're not going to cut the face and then simply place the shears in, into the hair, and then just slightly cut as we go down the hair shaft. This is great for creating texture around the face. As you can see, we have short to longer pieces here but they're not all the same length and they're not very even so this give us that shard type of look. We can also do this in a layering or a vertical methoding using a vertical section. Remember vertical gives us elongation so by this, I'll take my shears and just talk them down. Notice that I'm not completely closing the blade. I'm just working my shears down the hair shaft, talking them down, but not completely closing them on the hair shaft. Nor am I getting into this ripping effect of the hair which typically comes with a slide cutting type of motion. This almost gives us a razor type of effect so for those clients that don't like to have a razor used on their hair, this is a good method of creating a lot of texture and a lot of movement in the hair without having to use a razor. There's people with curly hair, it's perfect for those types of clients.
