How to Thin the Back for Women's Hairstyles

Hi, I'm Chris Faircloth, Artistic Director and co-owner of Salon Teez. For Expert Village, this is how to trim women's hair. For this segment, we'll actually be cutting the hair using our thinning shears or blending shears. Again, using a horizontal type of sectioning line, we'll comb the hair straight down. Our finger angle mirrors the horizontal section and using our thinning shears we'll simply just begin cutting the hair until the hair eventually just disappears all together and that we've cut all the length of the hair. We don't want to leave these little pieces here; we want to just keep cutting until all of that hair is completely gone. I've got my guide here so I'll begin to cut the hair to make sure that all of the little longer pieces are completely gone. By doing this, it gives us more of a tattered line or shattered line with texture on the end and not quite as blunt. Bring it down to where I see my guide. This time I don't want to let the guide slip in between my fingers because I need to use that as a visual reference point. And I'll just continue to cut the hair until it basically falls away. Again I see my guide, let it slip. Now as we did with the scissors before, I won't necessarily need to do the top in two different sections, I'll just let the section on the top drop and comb the hair in its natural fall. And now we've created a nice even line but yet textured in the back using our texturizing shears.
