Hi! My name is Julio Anta from Anta’s Fitness & Self Defense in Miami, Florida. My website is www.antakungfu.com. In Southern Kung Fu, we believe in attacking what we call the 3 gates. Let me explain what is the three gates are. Some martial arts only attack the torso. Some attack the head and the torso, because they were meant to be sports. Remember this is the way they fought in battle in southern China. When you lost your weapon your sword, your spear, it was hand-to-hand, so anything goes in our system. Well, the upper gate is anything from here to here. From my neck to my head, we call gate attack. I can grab your throat, stick a sphere through your eyes, claw at your eyes, punch, and obviously kick, which we don’t believe in kicking to the head but you could. Middle gate is your torso, any part of your torso or your arms. We believe that we don’t block, we strike to strike. The guy punches, we strike a strike to hurt his weapon. Now he can’t fight us or we can punch, kick, elbow, knee the torso. That’s the middle gate and the lower gate is one of my favorite points to attack nobody expects it. Remember this is not a sport, this is really for self-defense. But it’s a traditional style of self- defense. We can kick the lower gate, we can grab, we can kick the knees, we can kick the groin, we can punch, all that. In southern styles of Kung Fu we work with 3 gates.
