What is the Snare Used for in Jazz Drum?

Hi I'm Shaun Schaefer on behalf of Expert Village. And today we are going to be learning how to play a basic Jazz drum beat. So now that we are getting there. We are super close and we haven't even talked about the Snare drum yet and what its purpose is and what it's doing in a basic Jazz drum beat. As you probably know in Rock music the Snare drum is played on tune four. Kind of what our high hand is doing with our foot on tune four, right? That's the beat. Remember the snapping. Yeah you are getting in right on tune four. Snare drum is and that it's purpose in Rock music. In Jazz music the hand takes over that two and four. Takes over that feel. O.K.? So where's the Snare drum. No it's not taking the day off. It's primarily used kind of in the same manner as the kick drum where the kick drum's kind of decoration and added. So is the Snare drum. The Snare drum kind of like the cherry on top. O.k. Like if the horns had a big accident on the end of three. May be the Snare drum's hitting that or may be the Kick drum. Who knows? So it's kind of used in a manner that is adding some decorations or some color to the piece as opposed to being the main thing like in Rock music the kick Snare and the high hand or the foundation of not only just the drum beat and the drum set but the of the band. So in this the Snare drum's not really doing that. But where the Kick drum might give you some power and add some really strong accents or really allow people to know where you're at with that particular kick. Or a kick as we call it in your own accent. The Snare drum, I like to view as a more tasteful decoration. Or may be you do something like, something a little role things or some light, some light, light little things. And just really add a nice little touch to the piece you are playing. So the Snare drum in Jazz might not have or might not seem to have a big part in the foundation of the Jazz beat. But the Snare drum is a very nice tool to add some decoration and color to the piece you are playing. As really is with Tom's as well. O.k.? The Snare drum you are going to use a little bit more but it's everything is just kind of the drums or kind of more just like a decoration to what you're doing. And the Horn players, if you're playing with Horn players. They're going to dictate kind of what you're doing with the Snare drum. So, let's take a look at what the next step is in playing a Jazz drum beat.
