How to Comb a Horse's Tail

Hi, I'm Kelli and this is Covey on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you my options and techniques on how to groom your horse. So now we are going to brush through her tail to get any tangles out, any saw dust out. We are going to use a brush like this, just a regular hair brush. It has little knobs on the end of the bristle. You don't want anything wire or anything that might rip out of their hair. So we just going to follow her back with our hands so she knows that we are headed back to her hind end region. So we are going to stand off to the side. We never want to stand directly behind. So we are going to take her tail, we are going to pull it out to the side. We are going to work just in small sections. Getting any of the tangles out and we are going to hold the tail and kind of comb from the ends first. Like you would if you had somebody who had longer hair than you were trying to comb and get the tangles out. Cause if you hold it like this and just do short brushing strokes, it would work out a lot less of the hair. It is more desirable for your horse to have a nice full tail then a scroungy one. So you want to minimize riping out as much hair as you possibly can. If you work in smaller sections, it is a lot easier than going for it all at once. I also put a lot detangler in her tail when I bathe her. She just had a bath like week so when you do that, it makes it a lot easier for you to comb through. Now I don't comb her tail everyday cause it is not necessarily good to comb it everyday. You don't want to rip all the hair out cause you want their tail to grow really nice and full. But you can put anytime you want to comb it there is leave in detanglers that you can buy specifically for the tails that will make it a lot easier to comb through. But I always just comb through it to make sure that I get out any saw dust. Like that there is a big chunk of shadings in there right now that we want to get rid of. Just do small brushing strokes get out any tangles that are at the ends. Then you can see usually the tail is nice and full but I have a lot of tangles and we did not rip out a lot of hair doing it either so that is how you want comb your horse's tail.
