Wrist Positioning for Relieving Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Pain

Hi! I’m Monica and today I am going to show you some things that you are going to want to do if you are having carpal tunnel syndrome. First of all, one thing you want to do is make sure that your wrist is in a nice comfortable position. Usually if you have your wrist in neutral and you bend it back just slightly, about 20 degrees or so, that should be the most comfortable position for someone. So if you are doing any type of typing or using hand tools or anything like that try and have your wrist back just a little bit, again, probably about 20 degrees or so, is the most comfortable spot on this carpal tunnel right here and will offer the least amount of pressure to this area here. There are splints that you can also wear that will do exactly that. They bring back the wrist just a little bit when you are doing different activities, so you don’t have to worry about trying to remember to keep your wrist caught back like that. Another great thing you can do is use heat of some kind in the area. Since the carpal tunnel is superficial, you don’t have to keep heat on for too terribly long. Usually about 10 minutes is all you need. Again, you want to make sure that your hand is in a nice comfortable position. Slightly extend it back until about right there. Have the heat on just letting it rest there. That will help relax the nerves and relax things. Usually, you don’t ever want to use ice in that area, because it can increase the pain more. It sometimes causes vasospasm of the blood vessels.
