How to Hook the Girth of an English Saddle

Hi! I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village. I am going to show you my techniques to saddling a horse with an English saddle. Now that we have our saddle placed on her back, we are going to take our girth. This girth has elastic on both sides which makes it really easy. Some English girths will have just leather on one side an elastic straps on the other. So if it was a girth like that, we would want a non-elastic side to be hooked on the right. We are going to walk around and hook up the right side of our girth first. The reason that we do this is because we always want to tighten your horse's girth on the left because that is the side that you mount from. So we are going to just hook this up first and put this on the first notch so we can ensure that we have enough room to bring the girth around the other side. Walk far enough away from her back end when we walk behind her so that she does not get startled and kicked. So we are going to reach under her belly, we are going to take this girth and slip it through the little slot here, going to take our billet and put it through and we are going to put it on really loosely. You never want to crank the horse's girth up too tight when you put it on. That can make them a little bit unhappy. Also too, many horses will bloat themselves, they will blow up and expand and hold their breath so that you can't get the girth nice an tight, so you do get on the saddle and it will slip which can be really dangerous. So when we first hook it up, we are going to put on really loose and then go on and tighten it.
