Polycarbonate Lenses: Men's Eyeglasses

Now I’m going to talk to you about the lens option of polycarbonate lenses. These lenses are a little bit different than your high index lenses. The polycarbonate lenses are what is deemed a shatter resistant lens. There are a few reasons why you would and why you would not want to go with a polycarbonate lens, it’s kind of a give and take, if you were working construction, if you do a lot of sports activities, like if you’re using Rec-Specs, if you know what I mean, those sports goggles that you use for basketball and other, racquetball and other sports, um you’re going to want to have polycarbonate lenses in, these are impact resistant, so if you get hit in the face with an object your lenses will not shatter back into your eyes, it’s a safety precaution so again, you’re doing something physical where there’s an opportunity for you to get hit in the face with something you want to have some protection and polycarbonate lenses give you that protection, the drawback to polycarbonate lenses is that they are not as good optically as high index or plastic lenses, light does not diffuse through them quickly so the optics are a little bit poorer, most patients will say they did not notice that difference but you may notice it if you go from a high index plastic to a polycarbonate lens. There is one other reason I would fit a polycarbonate lens and that’s for when we fit a frame like this, the rimless frame, the filament string holds the lens in and that string can move and as it moves in that groove, you know as your prescription, your lenses are going to be grooved and that filament is going to hold it in place and as that string moves it could chip the lenses if you have a high index or plastic lens in the frame so we want to do polycarbonate in those so you don’t have the chip and you don’t have the, uh, you know it doesn’t look very nice, it’s not very becoming so those are the, that’s the reason that I would fit polycarbonate lenses and that’s the reason you might want to choose them.
