Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Calf

Hi! My name is Monica and the next exercise we’re going to show you is actually a strengthening exercise. What it helps strengthen is your calf muscles. What you need to have at home is either some stairs work great, or in our case, I’m going to show you how to do it without stairs. You can actually pile up a couple of phone books, something like that. You want to make sure that you can lift your feet off the ground a little bit because you want your heel free to come up and down. What you want to do is take your couple of books, have the stacked close to a wall or handrail, something like that, so you have something to hold on to. You want your toes on so that the balls of your feet should feel comfortable, so that you are not going to fall off. Then the motion is up and down, up and down. You can see how my knees are slightly bent in this. The other variation is known pigeon-toed. Knees bent again, up and down. You can see how I let my heel drop. You can start off doing 10 or 15 of these each way. Once you get used to 10 or 15 and it’s easy, you can start up doing 20 to 25.
