How to Play a Jig on the Hammered Dulcimer
Hi! I’m Tim Van Egmond here on behalf of expertvillage.com and I am here to talk about the hammered dulcimer. You can find out more about me at www.timvanegmond.com. What I would like to do now is demonstrate playing a jig. Again, the process of learning a tune, you want to find the easiest flow of finding where the notes are on the instrument, what order you play the notes in. One of the rules of thumb is you to try as little as possible. You try to avoid having to play one note say with your right hand on the left hand side of the bridge and then crossing over to the right with your left hand. That’s kind of awkward. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule but that is one thing to keep in mind as you are learning tunes. I am going to play the jig the Ethel Highlanders and I may also demonstrate some ornamentation; some of the things that can be thrown in besides the basic melody.
