How to Tune a Hammered Dulcimer
I'm Tim VanEgmond here on behalf of expertvillage.com and I am talking about the musical instrument known as the hammered dulcimer. You can find out more about me at www.timvanegmond.com. With the number of strings you have with the dulcimer as you can we have so many repeated strings, there is a great deal of tuning. The reward is the sound when you play it. But the tools of tuning are important to know because these are what you are going to want to have with a hammered dulcimer. The essential tool is the tuning wrench. This type is called the goose neck. There is also a T-wrench that has a handle perpendicular to the business part of the tool but basically what you are going to be doing is twisting putting the wrench on to the tuning pins and tuning up to the note. The other thing that helps you know what note to tune to is an electronic tuner which is available often through music stores and there are different LED's and needle read outs; different models have different ways of doing it but the best thing to do is to have a chromatic tuner. Some tuners are just set up for a guitar and will just give you the 6 notes of what you are tuning the strings to So this is for every note of the scale and it will indicate with the needle and also with the light read out whether you are sharp or flat and it is my understanding is it's better when you are tuning to come from below and tune up to the note. You will want to check from time to time because changes in temperature and humidity can make the wood swell or contract and can change your tuning somewhat.
