Hello, this is Joe Wiles with the Rock in Rock Conservatory for Expert Village in these series of segments we are going to talk about alternate picking. Most guitar players when they start playing they only down strums, they look like this. (playing guitar) Now you can do them fast in fact, to do them fast and only do down strums it sounds a little bit punk rock. As you can see we are waisting a lot of energy by not hitting the strings as we come back up if we do that is called alternate picking and it looks like this. (playing) As you can see with alternate picking we can do a lot more work with a lot less energy now in all of these exercises we are basically going to be using alternate picking. The premises every note you alternate between down and up strums, down up down up down up as you get the hang of it you'll find there is a superior technique to playing fast. In the next segment we are going to go over the C major pentatonic scale so your A minor pentatonic scale, I'll see you there.
