How to Talk Salary in a Job Interview
Hi! I'm Katie Roney on behalf of Expert Village and we are discussing how to have a successful interview. As candidates, one of the most daunting part of an interview is discussing salary. But be prepared for this, it is going to come up. Before you get into the interview, have arranged, know yourself what your market value is, go in there armed with information as to what people in your industry are making with your same skills and what you are targeting. Don't bring it up before they do; before your potential employer does. That is really their territory but they should and probably will bring it up at some point. If they start going over your past history asking you about salary and what you have made in past jobs, it is fine to go over with them. It is something that they do in every interview. You are not being singled out. Don't feel like you need to be put on the defensive or any thing. It is always important not to start too high. If a company feels like you are trying to cheat them almost by requesting a high salary, you are not going to look as probable as a candidate as you could if you kind of give them a really honest market range. Do your research there. Make sure that the company knows that you know your stuff as far as salary. Also, if there are any skills that you could use to increase your salary. If you say to an employer that you are looking for x,y,z not only do I have x, y and z but I have a, b and c. So I was looking to make a little bit more money because of that or because I have my Masters or PHD. I was looking for a little bit more money. That is fine. They are not necessarily going to want you to come down off your salary. What they are trying to do is understand why you are asking for that much. Just be honest and be prepared.
