Proper Singing Diction
Hi! I am Erica Lane and I am with Expert Village and I am talking about how to train the female voice. I want to talk about using proper diction. Using proper diction is one of the greatest things that I learned as a singer. One of the most influential things whenever you are singing a song to really get through to your audience. Diction involves words. If I were to speak to you like this and I was not really bringing out my consonants very much you would kind of wonder what is going on. As you notice I was just speaking without really bringing out my consonants it sounded kind of silly and you could not probably understand me as well as you wanted to. That’s why I am talking as precisely as I can. In singing you are going to exaggerate that even more so if I am going to sing Amazing Grace then I am going to sing it bringing out my consonants completely, because the more you can understand a word, the more emotionally you can become attached to the song… Now notice that I brought out my consonants especially Amazing grace how sweet the sound. So, I put the emphasis on the words that have the most meaning in the phrase. So, right then I was singing in more of an alto range. We are going to go ahead and sing in more of a soprano range… so notice even now I did not necessarily chop my words up and sing from one word to the next. I did connect my phrase, but I brought out my consonants so that you could understand my words very well because I want to make sure that you can relate to everything I am saying in the song or you are not going to be able to connect to it as well.
