Recapping to End a Job Interview
Hi. This is Katie Roney on behalf of Expert Village. We're discussing how to conduct an interview. At the very end of the interview, you're going to recap everything you've discussed. This is a great way to sum up your interview. It puts you and the candidate on the same page, you both feel a sense of completion as well as accomplishment, having made it through. So, when you're going over their resume, when you're going over the position description, during the interview, make a list of action items. It doesn't have to be a formal list. Just jot it down the side of your paper. If you have a candidate that's wondering "am I reimbursed for my trouble" and you don't know the answer to that, that's okay. Just tell them, "you know what, I don't know. I will get back to you". Make a note of it. If they have a question about benefits, vacation, anything you may not know, it's perfectly fine to say you don't know. Tell them, "I'm not the expert on benefits but I will get that information to you" and at the very end of the interview you want to recap all of this and say, "okay, well we've discussed, or there are a few things that I need to get back to you on, the benefits, the travel, any timelines for fulfilling the position", and just anything that was of concern to yourself or to him or her during the interview. You definitely want to just sum it up and say, "okay I'll get back to you. I'll phone you, I'll e-mail you and we'll get together and I'll answer your questions for you then".
