Seeds and dry fruit can also choke guinea pigs.

Dried fruit can overdose them on sugar allotment and lead to diabetes. Avoid using any treats with any kind of dairy base, such as yogurt. Any dietary benefits from yogurt are lost on guinea pigs as they are complete herbivores. Only use sugar free treats and fresh veggies. Provide FRUIT on a limited basis, guinea pigs are as susceptible to diabetes as humans are. Oranges other acidic fruits should be limited as the acid can give them blisters on their lips. Feeding a Pet Guinea Pig: Part 2

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida, today, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. If you are changing your guinea pig’s pellets over from an alfalfa-based pellet to timothy-based pellet, which is the pellet that they should be on, you should do it slowly as any sudden changes in the diet can make your guinea pig not want to eat. Guinea pigs do tend to be creatures of habit, so therefore they do not tolerate changes and presentation of food or water or changes in the food very well. When you are changing the pellets over, you want to mix the old pellets with the new pellets about half and half and feed that for several weeks before introducing just the new pellet by itself. It is very important when choosing a pellet for your guinea pig that it is timothy-based and that is a plain pellet. Pellets that contain seeds or dried fruit can lead to digestive problems in your guinea pig. You should not feed your guinea pig rabbit pellets as a rabbit pellets do not meet the nutritional requirements that guinea pigs need. Guinea pigs need a higher level of folic acid and vitamin C, and rabbit pellets do not meet these requirements.
