This is Grace Fitzpatrick here on behalf of Expert Village and I am going to talk to you about the importance of keeping your counter top and surface clean when you are trying to train your cat to stay off the counter. One thing my dad taught me when I was younger about training animals is that it is always the owner's fault if your animal does something bad. It is never the animal's fault. I think what he meant to say was that you can always take steps to prevent your animals from doing something bad instead always just punishing them for doing things. One reason that is really important with the counter tops and surfaces problem is a lot of times people will leave food out on their counter or they will leave dirty dishes in a sink and this is nothing but temptation for your cats. So if you want to prevent yourself from having to spray all the time or you want to keep them off the counters for sanitary reasons, then I would suggest keeping your counters free of clutter and food when you leave the room. I know that if I left the room and left out just a morsel of food on the counter that my cats would be up there in 2 seconds flat. Whereas if I had just cleaned it in the first place, they might have never gotten up there at all.
