Hi! My name is John Armstrong with expertvillage.com, I’m a professional guitar instructor and today I’ll be going over some of the basic rudiments of playing lead guitar or soloing. Okay next we’re going to harmonize major scales using sweep picked arpeggios, now sweep picking is a technique where we pick in one fluid motion for example when moving up the arpeggio, now all an arpeggio is a cord the notes of the cord played individually, for example if I was to take this D-major arpeggio which is a D, F-sharp, A, D, F-sharp and A, my root, my third, my fifth, my root, my third and my fifth note of a D-major scale. Notice if you notice it with my right hand here I’m picking when I’m moving up the arpeggio I pick using all down picks and back the arpeggio I pick using all up picks…it’s called a sweep picking. What I’ll do now since the arpeggio is just a cord is I’ll take a D-major scale which is going to go D, E, F-sharp, A, B, C-sharp and D and I’ll harmonize it using major, minor in diminished patterns, here’s D-major…E-minor my minor two cord…F-sharp my minor three cord…G-major…A-major…B-minor…C-sharp diminished…and then back to the pentatonic back to D-major…put it all together…
