Casting & Auditions for Kid Actors

SCOTT DUPONT: Scott DuPont, welcome back. I am the producer of the "ABC's of ACTING (How to get started in the business!)." And on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to talk to you a little bit of it in this segment about castings and auditions. And I can speak as an actor. I've been in the business more years than I want to talk about. But I've also been producing for over 10 years many different children's programs. We're actually doing a feature film where there's some kids starring. That's my next project that I'm producing. So I'm very well versed in what goes on both in front of the camera as talent and behind of the camera when we're dealing with kids. Now, some of the things you want to do is you want to be really prepared before you go in the audition. You want to make sure you have at least two or three head shots. Okay? You want to make sure that your resume is printed on the back with your contact name as well as your child's, your contact phone number, your cell number, the easiest way to get in touch with you. If you eventually have an agent, that agent's contact number should be on there. If you have any experience, obviously, you list that in your resume, the more, the better. And don't worry initially. It just takes a little bit of time to get those little notches of student films or extra work or classes. Have some patience. This whole business takes a little bit of time. So anyway, be prepared and I have a little list of questions and you parents, if you're watching this at home, if you want to write this down, when an agent is calling you for an audition slot or if you don't have an agent yet and you got an audition of a Web site or if a producer contacts you directly, if it's one of these non-union, low-budget commercials, a couple of questions you want to be asking about this before you go to the audition. Number one, you want to ask when does the commercial or when does the film shoot, because if you're not available, you don't want to go on the audition or to callback. You're going to waste everybody's time including yourself. You want to ask if it's union or non-union. You want to ask--and this is not rude. But just ask: What's the pay of this film or what's the pay of this commercial? Another thing is what's the character? What should my kid dress as far as the wardrobe? Is there a script? Or--they also call them sides. Are there story boards? And then who is my contact when I get to the audition? Who is the casting director that's actually running the audition? And then finally, of course, you want to get detailed directions or the exact address, so you could do a MapQuest. So those were all the things that you want to find out, and we're going to be back in just a minute with the second part to this segment, and that's exciting. That's what happens inside the audition. So on behalf of Expert Village, stay tuned.
