This is Lauren on behalf of Expert Village and we're talking about digestive issues in chinchillas. Diarrhea is a serious issue in chinchillas and should always be taken seriously. If these symptoms occur, it's always best to go to a veterinarian. On the other hand, if you are not able to go to a veterinarian right away, there are a few things that you can do, to help with the problem. Try first to determine the immediate cause of the issue. Did you give your chinchilla something to eat that was unusual? Did you change the brand of food that you're feeding? Did you offer too many treats? Was your chinchilla exposed to another one and may have picked up something from that one? Did your chinchilla get cold maybe? To start with, you can add just a small pinch of oatmeal flakes; it's just dried, regular, uncooked oatmeal. Just take a pinch of that and mix it in, just put it on the top of their food and let them eat that. It tends to help out with this problem, make everything a little bit solid in their digestive tract. And hopefully kind of put them back on track. There's also supplement foods that can help with this issue. You can go online and look for something that is going to help out with digestive problems, that have added nutrients as well, that are going to replenish anything that was lost. For hard stools, what you want to do is ask yourself a lot of the same questions. Impaction is a pretty serious issue that they have. It's when everything gets stopped up in their digestive tract and nothing is moving. Once a chinchilla stops eating, they start to go downhill rather quickly. So you want to make sure that they get eating and everything moving pretty quickly after that. And it's important to get any mass that is blocking the intestines, to get it to move through. So, for this reason it is important to take them to a veterinarian right away. Stay with us in the next segment and we're going to talk about teeth issues.
