MIKE LOPEZ: Hi. I'm Mike Lopez with Expert Village, and today we're going to be discussing the black color from "Magic: The Gathering". And now I'm going to go over Essence Drain. Essence Drain is a powerful card for utility black in the basic set as we see here, and it's a 10th edition card. It is a sorcery and Essence Drain costs you 4 and a black to play which means its converted mana cost is 5. Essence Drain deals 3 damage to target creature or player and you gain 3 life. Once again, you will see this in a lot in the black color in which you suck the life from your opponent. You will also see other cards that you lose life and your opponent lose life or you get to do something that causes you to lose life. Once again, this is what we call a life drainer because you're draining the life from your opponent or, in this case Essence Drain, as the title stipulates, from target creature or player and 90% of the time you will do it to the player and you would gain 3 life. Once again, this makes this card a very powerful card.
