Supplies for Recycling Old Clothes

My name is Julia Barbee. My clothing line is Frocky Jack Morgan. On behalf of Expert Village, this is a tutorial on recycling and deconstructing old clothes. Let's say that you have a t-shirt like this with a stain on it that you want to deconstruct. We need to look at what the tool kit is going to be. First of all, a needle and thread, a really nice pair of scissors that you write fabric on because you don't want to ever cut paper with them. Then you need all kinds of little goodies to embellish with. I have some rhinestone buttons, some flowers that I've cut off of big garments like this. I go to estate sales and I go to antique malls. You can find some really beautiful old bead work in those kinds of places that maybe doesn't have a home and you can repurpose it. For example, I bought this beautiful tapestry and I love all of the silver work on it, but I'm also going to tear it apart. I use each little piece back again in the garments. I usually just end up with this jumble unfortunately. I use the old pieces to rebead into the new garments that I'm constructing. There are a lot of sequence shirts that have butterflies on them like this, so I cut the butterfly out and use that by itself. This was a big sequence dress that I took apart and I just really liked the color of it. Here's another hat that I really like the bead work on, but I'm going to take it apart and use just the pieces. I also like to look for old lace that's really delicate. Usually since it's so rare, I'll just small pieces of it at a time. I do collect a lot of old ribbon. Here's a giant bow off a dress that supposedly I'll find a use for at some point. Even old t-shirts if I think what they say is funny or something, I'll cut that out and use that as well.
