Washing Car Wheels when Detailing a Car

Hi! I am Bob Osborne with Expert Village. The second part of the car that I usually address is the wheels and the tires and then the rocker panels. The wheels and the tires take a little bit of extra time because on most expensive vehicles, the type of cars that I like to do, you have multi-spoke wheels. We not only clean the outside of the tire, but we are cleaning the inside of the wheel also and then also the actual inside of the fender well is cleaned also. I use a cleaner-degreaser on the inside of the fender well and the tires. I spray very liberally. I let it dwell for a bit and then I spray a wheel cleaner on the wheel itself which is an acid base cleaner. It is biodegradable, but you definitely want to wear gloves when you use products like this. They won’t really hurt you but they will irritate your skin. Again spray it liberally and let it dwell for just a bit. At this point is when I go ahead and start actually cleaning the fender well and again we are using separate sponges, separate buckets, separate water for this process than I do on the rest of the car, so I do not pick up and move around dirt, grit and gravel that can scratch the paint. A brush like this is really helpful for the inside of the wheel and then I use a paintbrush to agitate around the spokes. The wheel cleaner is very effective in breaking away brake dust and grit, grime and grease but doesn’t need much agitation. Spray and rinse and it’s just about perfect.
