On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Rodney Lopez and I'm Amelia Maldonado. We're here at Dance Manhattan Studios here in New York City, and we're teaching you bachata. Hi, I'm Rodney and this is Amelia. We're going to be talking to you about bachata. Bachata is a beautiful dance form the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. It's different from merengue in not only its rhythm, but also in its sound. A lot of strings in bachata and many of the lyrics are very sad. It's a very popular dance. It started from the coastal towns of the Dominican Republic, but it so popular here in New York City and around the world. There's a lot of different ideas as to where bachata came from. Amelia has some ideas on that. I'm not sure if this is true, but it's been said that this particular dance comes from houses where women would dance with gentlemen to kind of arouse them. That's part of the dance where you kind of lift the hip up a little bit. That could be true. Maybe not, but it is really beautiful dance. We're going to show it to you right here on Expert Village.
