Using Pattern Overlay in Photoshop Layers

JIMMY HARTMAN: Hi, this is Jimmy on behalf of Expert Village. And in this clip, we'll be looking at the Pattern Overlay layer style. Okay, so let's go and apply our Pattern Overlay here. Now, it's pretty much the same as our Color Gradient overlay, where as it replaces the object with a different, in this case, pattern. It just overlays this pattern onto our object. We can change our scale to change the size of that pattern. We can click this Down arrow here to change a pattern. We have our Opacity again and our Blending mode. Down here, we also have the link with layer button. Now, that is the same as our Texture and our Bevel and Emboss, whereas if it's a link with the layer, when you move your layer around, the pattern follows it. If you uncheck it and move your layer around, the pattern stays stationary but your object moves. So we'll go ahead and just demonstrate that again one more time. As you can see Link With Layer is checked so our pattern is staying with us. And then if we go back to our Pattern Overlay, uncheck Link With Layer, you can see our pattern remains as it would look in the background and our image moves above it.
