Proper Ground Position Tips in Hang Gliding

Hi, this is David Duke, welcome to Expert Village. In this next clip, we're going to talk about a little bit of ground handling, ground school. Doing what I'm about to do here actually takes a lot more practice than it looks, but with a little finesse it comes really easy. Your instructor is not going to let you go up the hill at all, won't let you get off the ground at all, until you can show that you can actually balance this on the ground here. Your first flight will be on level ground here, and your second flight will be a whole one foot of altitude, where you can't get hurt. And you will progress gradually up; the top of that hill is actually maybe two or three training days away. And that's only a fifteen foot hill. The first thing you need to do is be able to walk and run while balancing on your shoulders, without looking at the ground, tripping over your feet, seeing where you're going, not getting off. You need to able to have your eyes out on target, see your wings in your peripheral vision, keep your glider on your shoulders, and be able to gradually progress from a walk, to a jog, and into a full-on run, without looking down, and without getting the glider off balance. And keep in mind that the wind is not absolutely steady, there's a little bit of turbulence too it, so, but you have to a little bit, see you have to have a little bit of active control to it, as the glider moves through that turbulence.
